Carmen tells the passionate and tragic story of a free-spirited gypsy who captivates a young soldier, Don José. Set in 19th-century Seville, the opera follows Carmen's tempestuous relationships and Don José's descent into obsession and jealousy.
When Carmen throws a flower at Don José, a soldier guarding a cigarette factory, he is immediately smitten. Despite his engagement to the sweet Micaëla, Don José abandons his duty and his fiancée to follow Carmen into a life of smuggling and passion.
However, Carmen's love is fickle, and when she turns her attention to the bullfighter Escamillo, Don José's jealousy leads to a tragic conclusion. Carmen features some of opera's most beloved melodies, including the "Habanera," "Seguidilla," and the "Toreador Song."
